  • Which local towns & cities can we visit?
    White Horse Cottage is ideally placed to visit several local towns & cities: Winchester - 25 minute drive The ancient capital of England; wander the ancient walls around the cathedral grounds and stroll along the pedestrian High Street where you will find a plethora of High St shops, independent boutiques and shops as well as many restaurants, pubs and cafes. Petersfield - 20 minute drive A bustling market town with an array of shops, supermarkets (Tesco & Waitrose) restaurants, cafes and pubs all based around a central market square. Market day is Wednesday and Saturday. Enjoy a stroll around Petersfield Heath and stop off for a cuppa and cake at The Plump Duck Cafe Open 7 days a week 10am-5pm. Portsmouth - 30 minute drive Home to the historic Naval Dockyard, Portsmouth is a history buff's dream. Visit Nelson’s flagship HMS Victory, Henry VIII’s Mary Rose and HMS Warrior where you can explore life at sea in the 1800’s as well as the new Royal Marines Museum (coming soon) and an interactive boat shed. Included in your dockyard ticket is a Portsmouth Harbour boat tour. For those who prefer shopping head to Gunwharf Quays where you will find the designer outlet village, cinema, bowling and a range of bars and restaurants. Portsmouth Harbour station is between the Dockyard and Gunwharf and you can hop on the catamaran to the Isle of Wight for the day. To take the car over you will need to book with Wightlink. Southsea seafront provides good old English seaside entertainment with various arcades and Southsea pier.
  • What family friendly things are there to do locally?
    There's lots to keep you and your little (and not so little) ones entertained. Here are some of our favourites: Winchester Science Centre & Planetarium (17 minutes/10 miles away) Portsmouth Historic Dockyard (35 minutes/21 miles away) Blue Reef Aquarium, Portsmouth (36 minutes/21 miles away) Paultons Park & Peppa Pig World (41 minutes/27 miles away) Marwell Zoo (21 minutes/12 miles away) Staunton Farm & Country Park (25 minutes/12 miles away) Weald & Downland Living Museum (37 minutes/23 miles away)
  • Are there any beaches nearby?
    There are several beaches within an easy drive of White Horse Cottage: West Wittering with fantastic views of Chichester Harbour and the South Downs beyond. (45 minutes/33 miles away). Hayling Island the birthplace of windsurfing and with cycle trails, it's very own Funland Amusement Park and Hayling Seaside Railway (32 minutes/21 miles away). Southsea (35 minutes/22 miles away)
  • Can we hire bikes locally?
    Yes. We're lucky to have Meon Springs Cycling just outside the village.
  • Are there any golf courses near White Horse Cottage?
    There certainly are! Here are some of the closest: Petersfield Golf Club - 18 hole golf course (18 minutes/12 miles away) Worldham Golf Club, Alton - 18 hole golf course (21 minutes/14 miles away) Liphook Golf Club - 18 hole golf course (26 minutes/16 miles away)
  • Are there any National Trust properties nearby?
    Yes, there are. Here are some of the closest: Hinton Ampner, an elegant country house with distinctive gardens (10 minutes/5 miles away). Uppark House & Garden, a tranquil 17th-century house set within intimate gardens and woodland (25 minutes/14 miles away). Winchester City Mill, an ancient working watermill and café in the heart of Winchester (19 minutes/12 miles away).
  • Can you recommend any local walks?
    The Meon Valley Trail - starts a short walk from White Horse Cottage. A level, easy walk for all ages and abilities. 10 miles to Wickham.
  • When can I arrive?
    The cottage will be ready for you from 3pm on your day of arrival. On occasion it may be possible to arrive a little earlier, please do always ask and if we can, we will do our best to accommodate your wishes.
  • How do I get in?
    The key will be left for you in a coded key safe. The code will be sent to you by the owner, prior to arrival.
  • What do I need to bring?
    We hope the list below will give you a good idea of what things are provided for you at White Horse Cottage: - Welcome Hamper containing a few goodies to help get your holiday off to a good start; - Bed linen & bath towels; - A selection of teas, coffee, hot chocolate; - Sugar/herbs/spices/salt & pepper - Logs, firelighters, kindling & matches - Dishclothes, washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets - Cling film, tin foil - Tea towels - Hair dryers - Fans/fan heaters - Picnic blankets - Barbeque and tools (charcoal not included)
  • Are pets allowed?
    Dogs are allowed, however, we ask they are never left in the house unattended and kept downstairs at all times.
  • When do I have to leave?
    On your day of departure we ask for you to have vacated the property by 10am in order that our Housekeeper can arrive to work her magic. Prior to leaving, we please ask that all used beds be stripped and the bedding left in a neat pile on the bedroom floors, and all used towels to be placed in the bathtub. Please also ensure all bins are emptied into the relevant wheelie bin and all washing up done and put away.
  • Can I arrange a supermarket delivery to the house?
    Yes, all the major supermarkets deliver to the village. We suggest booking a delivery slot for after 4pm on the day of your arrival and advising the driver to deliver to the back door.
  • Will you hold a damage deposit during our stay?
    Yes, we ask to hold a cautionary deposit of £100 during your stay at White Horse Cottage. This is requested just two weeks prior to your stay, and is returned shortly after, assuming no damage to the property or its contents. This deposit is payable by either cheque or online BACS transfer.
  • Are there any house rules we should be aware of?
    Yes, to ensure you have a wonderful and memorable stay at White Horse Cottage, we ask that you understand the following important house rules: No fireworks please Not suitable for stag or hen parties No additional day-guests please (without prior agreement) and the maximum number of guests at the house must not exceed 10 (without prior agreement).
  • Is the house suitable for children?
    Children are very welcome and White Horse Cottage. The following are provided for use by children: - 1 x travel cot (please bring your own bedding) - 1 x highchair - 1 x stairgate (fixed at the top of the staircase) Please note that due to the age and characterful nature of the property, there are wide gaps between the banisters going up the stairs (see photo gallery). Children must be supervised at all times when using the stairs.
  • Where's good to eat out?
    There are lots of lovely country pubs, restaurants & cafes within a relatively short distance from White Horse Cottage. Some of our favourites are: Cuppacheeno Cafe, West Meon - Located to the rear of the village shop (entry to the left of the shop). Open 7 days a week from 9am until 3pm serving a variety of hot and cold meals, cakes and drinks for both takeaway and eat in. The Thomas Lord, West Meon - named after the founder of Lord’s Cricket Ground (who is buried in the local churchyard) this is our award winning local village pub. Booking is essential. The George & Falcon, Warnford - Lovely riverside pub in our neighbouring village. Can walk over the fields or along the Meon Valley trail, drive or cycle. The Shoe, Exton - A short drive away south on the A32 and you’ll find the pub nestled next to the river Meon. A proper country pub.
  • Are there takeaways nearby?
    There are several takeaway options available locally. Due to the rural location of West Meon, most are collection only: West Meon Kebab Van - located at the crossroads of the A32 & A272 open every evening from 5pm. Takes card. Sam’s mobile Fish & Chip van - Brocklands Farm, GU32 1JN on Wednesday evenings.
